An original piece by Sobia Ahmad, As One They Quake, 11x14 inches (unframed), inkjet print from a 35mm negative on archival Japanese asuka paper, open edition, signature included, $350

This photograph is part of Ahmad’s ongoing, multifaceted work with Pando across various projects and installations. Pando, an ancient aspen forest in Utah, is unified by an immense root system. Ahmad took this image on 35mm black–and–white film, processed it in a coffee-based developer, and produced a unique negative contact print in the darkroom. The final image is an inverse of how we typically see the world and has been enlarged and printed on archival Japanese asuka paper. The rich textures and golden tone result from stains and artifacts from the homemade eco-friendly developer. For the last three years, Ahmad's film, photography, mixed media works, and public art projects have centered on Pando. Located across 106 acres in south-central Utah, Pando is a forest of one tree with interconnected roots. Believed to be over 10,000 years old, it is the largest known organism on land. Pando embodies many of the core ideas in Ahmad's work. She sees its root system as a guiding metaphor for interconnectedness and many entangled worlds and ways of knowing.
