Call for Artists – Reimagine the CMNH Section of Mystery (Due June 5)

Call for Artists – Reimagine the CMNH Section of Mystery
Deadline: June 5th, 2026

About this Opportunity:

Since 2016, CMNH visitors have been opening the door to the Section of Mystery to find a digital hologram display of birds featured in the collection. The bird image changed each time the door was closed and reopened. After nearly 10 years, CMNH is seeking to engage an artist to reimagine the Section of Mystery. While the previous Section of Mystery utilized digital media, we are open to any medium that can offer visitors the surprise and delight that made the first iteration so beloved.

Located in Bird Hall, and adjacent to the Bird Collection where nearly 200,000 specimens are housed and cared for, the Section of Mystery should remain an exhibit inspired by Birds.

Project Goals:

  • Surprise and delight visitors

  • Draw out a little known or awe-inspiring aspect of Birds for our visitors

  • Collaborate with CMNH exhibitions and science staff to create an exhibit our visitors will love

  • Create a piece that will remain on view for minimum 2-year period

  • Create a piece that can be maintained by CMNH exhibitions staff

Logistics/Support:

  • Though CMNH will not provide private studio space, space in the exhibition’s workspace will be available for workshops and installation.

  • Tour of Bird Collection with CMNH Collection Manager of Birds pending scheduling and availability.

  • Conduct consultations with museum science staff

  • Lead 1-2 Prototyping workshops with visitors

  • Maintain consultation with Senior Manager of Exhibitions and Technical Manager throughout project

Eligibility Requirements:

  • CMNH will only accept applications from artists in Pittsburgh or the surrounding area

  • Must be 18 or older to apply

  • Must be authorized to work in the US

  • During museum registration and onboarding, the final candidate must obtain Pennsylvania Act 153 clearances, including Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance, Pennsylvania State Police criminal history report, and FBI fingerprinting clearance. This process will be facilitated by the Volunteer & Internship Office once an internship offer is accepted
