'Stuck in Saṃsāra,' curated by Brent Nakamoto at Bunker Projects until March 22

'Stuck in Saṃsāra,' curated by Brent Nakamoto at Bunker Projects until March 22

On February 6, Bunker Projects celebrates our newest exhibition, Stuck in Saṃsāra, curated by Brent Nakamoto. Taking inspiration from the Lotus Sutra, the exhibition reimagines the Parable of the Burning House, one of the most important stories from the sutra. The story describes a vast house, owned by a very rich man, which suddenly catches fire. The man’s children are so busy playing that they do not notice or believe that the house is burning. In order to save them, he promises to give them his riches if they leave the house. In the story, the burning house represents the world of suffering—or samsara—and the man’s riches represent the Buddha’s teachings of liberation—nirvana. However, the sutra teaches that this is just a story. In truth, there is no way out of the house. We can only find liberation within the flames. The world of suffering is the world of liberation—to awaken to suffering is liberation itself.

The exhibition features ten AAPI artists from around the country, including Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and St. Louis, working in painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, and video. Exhibited artists are Christian Bañez, Martin Castro, Jon Chao, Anne Chen, Eriko Hattori, Marius Keo Marjolin, Brent Nakamoto, Anthony Park Kascak, Sara Tang, and Song Watkins Park.

There will be a public opening reception of Stuck in Saṃsāra on Friday, February 6, from 6:00-9:00 pm, at Bunker Projects (5106 Penn Ave.) during the Unblurred art crawl. Stuck in Saṃsāra will be on view at Bunker Projects from February 6 to March 22, 2025. There will be regular gallery hours on Thursdays from 12-7pm, and Sundays from 12-2pm, with tea hours on Thursdays from 12-2pm. Visitors are encouraged to hang out and share a cup of tea with us. The gallery will also be open by appointment. Please email mr.brentnakamoto@gmail.com to schedule a viewing time.

This permanent outdoor installation, commissioned by the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, was created to add an artistic touch to the playground fence. The artwork features a patch of flowers with pollinator friends on the outside of the fence, facing the parking lot, and a group of oversized flowers with additional pollinators on the inside, facing the museum. These vibrant flower patches appear to emerge from the ground, inspiring imagination and play while celebrating the beauty of nature.

We are 16 women artists who live in Southwestern Pennsylvania and exhibit as a group biennially. As individuals, we show locally, nationally, and internationally. Our monthly gatherings began over 40 years ago as a result of a class taught by the late Jerry Caplan at the then Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. Some of the original members are still in the group and others like myself have been invited over the years. We provide critiques of the art brought to the meetings as well as an opportunity to discuss the artistic process. In addition to myself other members are Jo-Ann Bates, Tina Williams Brewer, Kathy DePasse,  Alexis Dillon, Adrienne Heinrich, Paula Martino, Marina Mozhayeva, Judith Musser, Ellen Chisdes Neuberg, Jane Ogren, Debra C. Hi-NRG, a solo exhibition by Ben Schonberger, opens July 25th at 707

Hi-NRG, a solo exhibition by Ben Schonberger, opens July 25th at 707

Ben Schonberger: Hi-NRG opens July 25th, during the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Gallery Crawl, at 707 Penn Ave!

“The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is pleased to announce the opening of Ben Schonberger: Hi-NRG an exhibition of new work that draws from the visual culture of the gay underground and the sonic legacy of Patrick Cowley, a pioneering composer and producer whose work helped define Hi-NRG (pronounced “high energy”)—an accelerated form of disco that emerged in the late 1970s. For Hi-NRG, Schonberger constructed densely layered compositions sourced from vintage print media, merging representations of authority and sexuality. The works interrogate the shifting boundaries between power and desire, exploring how these forces converge within visual culture.

Ben Schonberger is an artist and educator based in Pittsburgh, PA. His work explores themes of identity, the archive, and power, often using photography as a foundation for sculpture, installation, collage, and performance. He is the author of four books and his work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is held in many prominent collections. Schonberger currently serves as Senior Lecturer in Photography and Program Coordinator for Media Arts at Point Park University. He earned his MFA in Photography from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI, and his BFA in Computer Imagery and Photography from Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, WV.
Ben Schonberger: Hi-NRG is presented by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.”

'Plastisphere: A Sinking Reality,' by La Vispera now on view Downtown

Plastisphere: A Sinking Reality, an installation by La Vispera, is currently installed at Heinz 57 Center - 345 Sixth Ave, Pittsburgh, PA.

This installation, primarily constructed from single-use plastic packaging, , addresses the issue of plastic overpopulation in our oceans. By scaling up a familiar household fish tank, we aim to highlight the beauty of the underwater life in an urban setting. We’ve also included a sunken ship, a common element in such tanks, to symbolize our throwaway culture and the unsustainable nature of our consumption practices.

New exhibition, smash the ceiling, floor, and walls; take the broken shards and blow it back, opening October 4th at the Pittsburgh Glass Center from 6-9pm. The exhibition will be on til January 20th, 2025.

smash the ceiling, floor, and walls; take the broken shards and blow it back critically analyzes the personal, professional, and political implications of heteronormative and patriarchal barriers through the creative work of femmes and gender non-conforming artists.
