Flower Residency Artists Open Call (Due Feb. 22)

Flower Residency Artists Open Call
Deadline: February 22nd, 2026

There will be a rolling application process for 2026 where you can apply for all four residencies at once or apply later as well. Applications for Residency 7 are due by February 22nd, 2026 at 11:59pm PT with no exceptions given. The applications due dates for the other residencies are to be determined. The initial application pool will be narrowed down by David Maxwell. The remaining applicants will be voted on by a board of directors of the residency consisting of artists, gallerists, curators, advisors and collectors, referred to as the Flower Petals. Results for Residency 7 will be circulated by March 8th, 2026.
Stipends: Residents will receive a $500 food stipend and a $500 materials stipend for the residency. Additionally, all canvases, panels, paper or other surfaces the artists use to create their work at the residency are provided for free.

Materials: This is a painting residency. The goal is for the artist to complete at least 5 paintings during the residency. The size of works may be agreed upon before the residency begins, so surfaces will be ready when the resident arrives, or the surfaces can be purchased upon arrival at the residency. The resident can include additional drawings.

Bringing Completed Work: The resident is encouraged to bring or ship finished works to show at the studio visits and end of residency event, at the cost of the residency. These finished works can count towards the 5 completed paintings if necessary. This will jumpstart the studio visit process with Flower Petals.

Sculptures: This is not a ceramic residency. The guest house is not set up for ceramics and clay is not allowed to be used. Other types of sculptures may be permitted on a case by case basis.

Residency Location: The Flower Residency is based in a guest house in David Maxwell’s backyard in Atwater Village, Los Angeles, California. The resident has private access to the guest house through a locked gate on the side of the house. Check out some photos.

Accommodations: The resident can sleep in the guest house for the duration of the residency. The guest house is equipped with a lofted bed, bathroom, shower, bathroom sink, AC unit, kitchen counter, kitchen sink, single electric stove top, lounge chair, table and chairs. All linens and towels are provided. The backyard has a refrigerator, grill, outdoor couch, lounge chairs and pool that can be used by the resident.

Eligibility: Applicants must be over the age of 18. International applicants are encouraged to apply.

Transportation:  Transportation to and from the residency is the responsibility of the resident. No car is  provided at the residency. The residency is conveniently located within walking distance of grocery stores, restaurants, bars and a park. There is a bicycle the resident can borrow when needed.

Obligations: This is a no cost residency. In exchange for the residency opportunity, the resident is required to donate one painting sized 18” x 24” to David Maxwell/The Flower Residency’s archive. The resident is encouraged to make this a self portrait. This donated painting will count towards 1 of the 5 completed paintings required. The resident is also asked to make and donate a portrait of David Maxwell for The Flower Residency's archive. This portrait will join Maxwell's large collection filled with works by emerging and established artists. The portrait will be on paper provided by the residency sized 8.5” x 11”.

Studio visits and end of Residency show: Various Flower Petals will visit the resident’s studio throughout the residency. Visits will be organized in advance to fit the schedule of the resident. The Flower Residency hosts an open studio or opening event to celebrate the resident at the end of the residency, to which Flower Petals and the public will be invited.
