Ceramics as Sculpture - International Sculpture Center (Due Feb. 5)
Ceramics as Sculpture - International Sculpture Center
Deadline: February 5th, 2025
We invite artists working with ceramics to submit sculptural works that explore the material’s conceptual, physical, and cultural possibilities. This call centers ceramics as a sculptural medium—one that moves beyond function to engage space, form, and critical inquiry.
Ceramics possess a unique duality: the medium is both ancient and contemporary, fragile and durable, domestic and monumental. Through sculptural approaches, artists can activate clay as a site of resistance, storytelling, and experimentation, pushing scale, surface, and structure to challenge how ceramics are perceived and valued.
Conceptual Framework
In the practice of ceramics, artists often address issues such as labor, material extraction, and the value placed on handmade objects. Ceramics can also highlight cultural heritage and challenge historical narratives around craft versus fine art. Additionally, the medium provides a platform to explore environmental concerns, bodily experience, and the politics of everyday domestic objects. We encourage submissions that engage one or more of these themes through sculptural form.
