The Eben Demarest Fund Award Nominations: The Pittsburgh Foundation (Due Sept. 12)

The Eben Demarest Fund Award Nominations: The Pittsburgh Foundation
Deadline: September 12th, 2025

The Pittsburgh Foundation invites you to nominate an artist for consideration for a special grant opportunity offered through The Eben Demarest Fund at The Pittsburgh Foundation.

Biennially, the Fund awards one grant in an amount of up to $14,000 to an artist or archeologist to support the creation of new work. Recipients must have produced significant work in their chosen fields and demonstrate special promise for future achievement. The Eben Demarest Fund Advisory Committee seeks qualified committee members to evaluate submissions and collectively make final funding recommendations for the Eben Demarest Fund grantmaking cycle.

As a nominator, you would be responsible for:

  1. Submitting a brief nomination form for one artist whose work you think offers special promise and for whom the grant will provide a unique opportunity to advance their work.

  2. Providing your nominee with the application guidelines. Nominations must be submitted separately by the deadline via the nomination form. Please do not hesitate to reach out to Katie Belonus with questions about the program. We hope you will forward a nominee for this year’s Eben Demarest Fund grant.

About the Program

The Eben Demarest Fund supports the work of independent creative artists and archeologists from across the United States. The Fund was established by Miss Elizabeth B. Demarest in 1939 in the name of her father as an expression of their shared interest in the arts and world cultures. For many years, Miss Demarest taught a course on the History of Civilization at the institution that has become Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She envisioned the Fund as a means of providing financial freedom for individuals to devote themselves to work in the arts and archeology.

Since its establishment, over 50 individuals from diverse artistic disciplines and the field of archaeology have been supported by The Eben Demarest Fund. Past grantees include painter Jackson Pollock (1948), poet Robert Duncan (1975), sculptor Carol Rubenstein (1979), painter Brendan O’Connell (2003), singer/poet Latasha Nevada Diggs (2008), and dancer/choreographer Kyle Abraham (2012). Recipients must have produced significant workin their chosen fields. Recipients must have produced significant work in their chosen fields and demonstrate special promise for future achievement. The Fund does not consider unsolicited proposals; each year the committee accepts nominations from a rotating pool of nominators in the arts and archeology fields.
