OCEANS Open Call - MIT Museum (Due Feb. 5)
OCEANS Open Call - MIT Museum
Deadline: February 5th, 2026
In support of the MIT Museum’s mission to welcome all to participate in MIT’s unique culture of problem-solving and playful creativity, we seek proposals for innovative public programs that explore humanity's relationship with the theme of OCEANS.
We live on an ocean planet. The oceans make up 71% of the Earth’s surface, yet we have better maps of the surface of Mars than of our ocean depths. Oceans are the world’s most important carbon sink, the origin of life on Earth, home to a known 226,000 species, critically important for food and trade, and threatened by climate change and pollution.
How can technology help us understand, explore, and map the oceans? What strategies will help safeguard marine biodiversity and coral reefs? How do oceans affect our atmosphere? Could oceans be the key to addressing climate change? How can we create a sustainable blue economy? OCEANS at the MIT Museum, launching in September 2026, will bring together art, science, technology, and design to investigate Earth’s last unexplored frontier.
ABOUT THE OPEN CALL
We are especially eager to review program proposals that demonstrate a meaningful connection to the theme of OCEANS and that bring a thought-provoking or unexpected perspective to it - we are interested in projects that connect art, science, technology, and design. We value programs that invite audience participation and engagement in new and inventive ways.
Topics may include, but are not limited to: ocean exploration, climate change and solutions, biodiversity, the blue economy, local and international policy making, and ocean engineering.
