Zach Brown: June 2019
“My paintings combine traditional techniques and materials with formal design. The
work juxtaposes the illusion of representational painting against the reality of the material and
the painting as an object. This duality is also seen in the mixing of contemporary and ancient
subject matter found in my work. The visual themes focus on the subjects of history, myth, and mortality.”
Zach Brown was born and raised in the small town of Mars Pennsylvania. After high school he
attended the Rhode Island School of Design where he received his BFA. Zach went on earn his
MFA from the New York Academy of Art. He currently lives and works in Pittsburgh where he
runs The School House art space.
“Most of 2019 so far was spent on home projects around The School House and had a show at the Pittsburgh Center For The Arts. Since then I've been painting monsters and large triangles. I also had to pop over to Chicago for a show at the Zhou B Art Center. That show got a nice little write up in Art Net where they called my paintings the "highlight" of the show which made me blush a little bit. Graham Shearing also curated some of my work into a Sister Wendy show he put on at Seton Hill University. “
