David Barr Legacy Artist Residencies

Inspired by the work of artist, writer, and educator David Barr, Michigan Legacy Art Park and Villa Barr are collaborating to provide artists with the time, space, support, and inspiration they need to further their creative work.

Reflecting the work of artist David Barr, these residencies offer opportunities for artists interested in nature, health, philosophy, science, math, education, research, or the Michigan experience.

Located at two different sites in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, from the urban southeast (Villa Barr) to the forested northwest (MLAP), each location offers distinct resources, amenities, and programming.

As the resident artist at either location, the artist shall create and exhibit their artwork and share their knowledge and vision with the public through ancillary educational/community services deemed appropriate by the artist and the host.

Thompsonville and Novi, Michigan: United States

Located at two different sites in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, from the urban southeast (Villa Barr) to the forested northwest (Michigan Legacy Art Park). 

Villa Barr is the most recent addition to the parks and recreation division of the City of Novi Michigan. The four-acre property, previously owned by internationally recognized artist David Barr and dancer Beth Dwaihy Barr, includes a home, studio and multiple sculpture installations in a park setting. 

Michigan Legacy Art Park is a 30-acre sculpture park dedicated to sharing the stories of the people, events and natural resources that continue to shape the legacy of Michigan. Founded by David Barr in 1995, the Art Park currently exhibits 50 works of art. Michigan Legacy Art Park is located in rural Benzie County, 15 miles from the shore of Lake Michigan and within the resort community of Crystal Mountain.
