Fall from Power
2010 Acrylic on board with wood platform and traffic cone Power ascribed to a person, institution or belief system is based primarily on perception and enforced through fear of retribution. However, this authority is at best tenuous and transient. The simple traffic cone represents a modern, unquestioned investiture of such authority. Upon encountering said cone, the typical urbanite will take notice and submissively yield to its jurisdiction and dominion. In realty, these orange, conical oligarchs are merely empty vinyl shells that may be deposed with little more than a swift kick. This can be observed in daily life by the significant lack of attention that a fallen cone commands. Using the traffic come as a metaphor, “Fall from Power” examines the illusory and fragile nature of individual, institutional, societal and biological hegemony.
