PITTSBURGH, March 2, 2006 Associated Artists of Pittsburgh were challenged to “think outside the pencil box” as they responded to theme of Drawing for a member exhibit opening on Friday, March 17th at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts (PCA). The opening reception for the exhibit was held on March 17th from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at PCA, 6300 Fifth Avenue, and was open to the public at no charge. Artists were encouraged to create art in any media, including 3-D with “drawing” as an integral part of the piece. Exhibit chair Marjorie Shipe explains, “Works could be submitted in any media and represent any subject. It might simply be a word on a page, a photo, a collage or a piece of ceramic. The options were wide open as long as “drawing” was featured in the piece.” The resulting exhibit selected by juror David Wilkins includes 55 pieces from 43 artists. Dr. Wilkins, professor emeritus of the History of Art and Architecture at the University of Pittsburgh, noted in his juror’s statement that he “came away with an appreciation of how many modes can be used to express the idea of ‘drawing'". Juror’s award winners include artists Ken Beer, Carolyn Wenning and John Dorinsky. Jessie Miller and Terri Perpich received honorable mentions. General exhibit hours at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, 6300 Fifth Avenue will be Tuesday-Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from noon until 5:00 p.m. The center is open free of charge to the public. The Associated Artists of Pittsburgh (AAP) has been promoting the visual arts in the Pittsburgh area since 1910.
